Defining death: Asian nations seek common standard linked to brain stem activity
Article Abstract:
Top neurologists and other medical professionals from Asian countries such as China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan and Vietnam participated in a workshop hosted by the Malaysian Neurological Society in Kuala Lumpur to formulate common standards and procedures on the determination of clinical death. The workshop was able to come out with a list of preconditions, exclusions and dignostic tests that can be used in the determination of clinical death. This was done in order that the legal aspect of meting out death pronouncements in the medical profession be less complicated in participant countries and, hopefully, in other countries also.

Worker woes: pro-union group slams Asian governments
Article Abstract:
The International Confederation of Free Trade Unions fiercely criticizes Asian countries in its latest annual survey, saying trade agreements should be linked to labor standards. Workers suffer greatly in the free-trade and export processing zones, and China and Pakistan are particular offenders, it claims. The head of the group's trade-union rights unit says conditions for workers are worsening in Asia even as the region's prosperity soars.
