Demergers and the Hanson experience. Part one: the prelude
Article Abstract:
Hanson PLC announced the demerger of its conglomerate business into four parts in Sep 1996. Hanson had been one of many businesses achieving success from the 1970s to the 1980s through diversification, extensive purchasing, and asset stripping. However, the economic climate became less favourable to conglomerates from the early 1980s. Hanson suffered, along with other acquisition-led holding companies, but Hanson's particular style of management made it more vulnerable to the adverse economic conditions, and its position in 1996 was weaker than that of other diversified companies.

Hedge fund analytics
Article Abstract:
US hedge fund Long Term Capital Management (LTCM) announced in September 1998 that it had lost investor's money worth $2.1 billion in the month of August, accounting for 44% of its total investments. The scale of the collapse was so massive that the Federal Reserve organized a bail-out plan to rescue the fund from liquidation. A case study analyses LTCM's loss of value and the damage it caused to investors. The nature of hedge fund investment is examined and compared with traditional theoretical investment models.
