Dengism enshrined
Article Abstract:
The 14th Congress of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) pushed aside rumors of 88 year old Deng Xiaoping's ill-health and revealed his continuing control over the party. The Congress was marked by political manipulations and changes in the Communist Party's charter to consolidate Deng's hold. There were no indications, however, about Deng's successor. In a keynote address CCP General Secretary Jiang Zemin defined the economic priorities of the country and reiterated the Party's commitment to market economy and private enterprise.

Deng speaks out
Article Abstract:
Chinese communist reformists have started to use media as a means of asserting their liberal views to the public. The move is aimed to show support for liberated thinking, emphasize the importance of economic progress and uplift cultural production. Chinese mass media practitioners have also been urged by Politburo member Li Ruihuan to broaden their public appeal through substantial coverage of current concerns. The reformists' bid for exposure was reinforced by the well-publicized visit of Deng Xiaoping to Guangdong province.

Deng's damage control
Article Abstract:
Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping is blaming former top Communist Party official Bao Tong for the pro-democracy demonstrations that eventually led to the Tiananmen massacre in 1989. Deng's move came in the wake of reports that radical Marxists will try to forestall his liberal economic policies in the 14th Congress of the Chinese Communist Party by blaming him and former party chief Zhao Ziyang for the rise of the pro-democracy movement in 1989.
