Denmark: Arla Foods in a joint venture with Fonterra
Article Abstract:
Swedish-Danish dairy giant Arla Foods and its rival Fonterra of New Zealand will start a joint venture company for the sale of cheese, butter and cream on the British market. The new company, that is to be based in Arhus, Denmark, will be 75% owned by Arla and 25% owned by Fonterra. The initial turnover of the company will be DKr3bn (US$361mn). Under the joint venture Arla will sell its Lurpak butter product, Yorkshire butter and Fonterra's Anchor butter, various cheeses and a special cream in a spray bottle on the British market. According to Arla Foods MD Jens Bigum, the two parties will consolidate their position in the world market through the joint venture which is also in line with Arla's new strategy to grow organically as well as through strategic joint ventures across borders. The joint venture deal will come into force next year provided that the British competition authorities give their approval to it.
