Determining the optimal direct mailing frequency

Article Abstract:

A stochastic dynamic programming model is formulated to study the problem on the frequency of mailing to a customer that establishes a profitable long-term relation with the customer when compared to targeting profitable groups of customers at every new mailing instance. The Markov decision model is calibrated for a large Dutch non-profit organization, which shows that substantial improvements can be achieved by approaching the mailing strategy.

Estimating the city-block two-dimensional scaling model with simulated annealing

Article Abstract:

Multidimensional scaling (MDS) method is applied in marketing research, statistics, computer science, engineering and technology and operational research. MDS identifies difference between two objects in a two-dimensional space. A new approach to solve the estimation problem of the city-block two-dimensional scaling model is presented.

Improved results on the 0-1 multidimensional knapsack problem

Article Abstract:

A 0-1 multidimensional knapsack problem is faced in situations like capital budgeting, cargo handling and computing processors allocation in large distributed systems. An algorithm combining linear programming with an efficient tabu search is examined for solving 0-1 multidimensional knapsack problems.
