Spanish private label cereals accounted for 9.5% of the total retail sales in the breakfast cereals market to amount to 2,783 tonnes in 1997. The private label sales recorded a sharp increase of 87.4% in the 1993 to 1997 review period, attributed to a good performance of the breakfast cereals markets. The children's sector is brand led that poses as a factor attributable to effective advertising, while the growth of private label was underpinned by the demand from the family cereals sector. The breakfast cereals market is particularly susceptible to private label due to many small firm, but private label sales started to slow and appeared to reached a mature stage towards the end of the review period.

The subsector includes fibre-rich, low-calorie and those cereals filled with vitamins or iron. The dietetic cereals proved to be the most dynamic type in the 1993 to 1997 review period, reflecting an awareness of dietary issues and increased demand for nutritional products.
