DoT LICENCE FEE KITTY SWELLS BY Rs199.79 CR
Article Abstract:
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has collected licence fees of Rs199.79 crore on March 30, 1999 the last date before the March 31 deadline, set by the communications ministry, for operators to pay 20 percent of their outstanding licence fees. DoT has been able to collect about Rs700 crore as licence fees so far. Encashing a Rs126.30 crore bank guarantee extended by JT Mobile accounted for a bulk of the amount collected on March 30, 1999 while the other payments were Rs51.75 crore from Spice Telecom and Rs20.74 crore from Reliance Telecom. POLICY PAPER CALLS FOR INFORMATICS MINISTRY

The Draft National Informatics Policy submitted by the Andhra Pradesh government has called for setting up a ministry of informatics. This is to be done by merging the Department of Telecommunications, the Department of Electronics and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. It has also recommended that a committee on information technology should be set up. The draft has called for the removal of the Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd's monopoly over international gateways. (khr)

ECIL, BDPS TIE UP FOR TRAINING

Electronics Corporation of India Ltd (ECIL) has tied-up with the Bureau of Data Processing Systems Ltd (BDPS) to offer training and education in information technology. They plan to provide training on topics ranging from fundamentals of computers to advanced courses. ECIL-BDPS centres are scheduled to begin operations by the end of January 1999 in Assam, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Karntaka, Goa, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry, Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Andhra Pradesh.
