Dollar politics
Article Abstract:
Ecuador plans to adopt the US dollar, and has passed a law for economic reform that includes this measure. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has promised to increased its support as a result of the reforms. The IMF has called for 12 clauses of the law to be amended and it is not certain that the changes will be approved. Additional reform is needed for Ecuador to move out of recession, and an agreement is also needed with foreign creditors. There is also social unrest, with labor unions planning further protests.

Jamil juggles
Article Abstract:
Ecuador faces a number of serious economic problems such as a collapse in the banking system, and President Jamil Mahuad has decided to postpone an interest payment on Brady bonds. This is the first time Brady bonds have been involved in a default, and Mahuad argues that he has the backing of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The IMF is seeking an increase in taxes in order to cut the budget deficit, but there are political obstacles to tackling public finances.
