Don't mention it
Article Abstract:
The German culture minister, Michael Naumann, argues that the British are obsessed with the 1939-1945 war. Television programming in the UK appears to back this up, since many programs refer to the war. Some British politicians agree with Naumann. Opinion polls show the British seeing the Germans as reliable allies in Europe, while the Germans do not see the British as reliable. The Dutch see soccer matches against Germany as a continuation of war. The French see a need to go beyond the idea of nation states in Europe, while the British see a need to contain Germany, both conclusions drawn after the 1939-1945 war.

Dangerous limbo
Article Abstract:
China's bid to join the World Trade Organization (WTO) was rejected by the US, though the Chinese prime minister, Zhu Rongji, was criticised in China for the number of concessions that he made. The US administration admits that it was wrong to rebuff China. Relations between the two countries worsened after the Chinese embassy was bombed in Belgrade, Yugoslavia. China's military budget is likely to beincreased, and there is little sign of an improvement in relations between China and the US or between China and Europe.

Wagging tails
Article Abstract:
China has made it clear that it regards recent moves to establish closer defence links between the US and Australia as a strategy to contain it. The US and Australia have denied that this is the case. Indeed, there is no evidence that these two countries wish to damage China economically. However, Australia clearly has a strong wish to strengthen its military links with the US. The Australian government also seems to be taking a more assertive view of the country's defence requirements.
