Article Abstract:
The Hungarian, Czechoslovakian and Polish stock markets plummeted in Jan 1995. Hungary's economy is similar to that of Mexico's, Czech privatization efforts have caused economic problems and speculation in Poland has made its bourse volatile.

European stock markets carry more weight than those of Japan in the Morgan Stanley Capital Index, yet investors have tended to see choices as lying between the US and Japan. The European economy is likely to grow more rapidly than the Japanese economy, and companies in Europe are restructuring more rapdily. Mergers and acquisitions in Europe were worth more than those in the US in 3rd qtr 1999, and the last time that this occurred was in 1993.
