Downunder looks to Asia
Article Abstract:
The Australian Overseas Telecommunications Corp (AOTC) has gained a firm foothold in Asia and is intent on improving its market base in the region. The company's presence in Asia is likely to hold sway against tough global competitors since its strong and monopolistic home base makes it easy to fund outside investments. Also, Australian gegraphical and climatic conditions vary greatly, thus, AOTC has ample experience in challenging conditions. The company is one of the leaders in telecom technology and has invested unsparingly in research projects. Asian migrants to Australia provides AOTC with a ready clientele.

Hard going
Article Abstract:
Developments in Australia do not augur well for an improvement in the country's economy. Its gross domestic product, which rose in the 2nd qtr of1992 by only 0.6% on a yearly basis, is lower than the 1991 figure by 1.6%. Moreover, the weakening of the Australian dollar has not stopped, fanning speculations that inflation could go up considerably. As a countermeasure to the negative developments, the government is focusing on improving the employment scenario. The counter-measure, however, is expected to pull down more the budget deficit as it entails spending more money for job generation projects.
