Article Abstract:
According to the Slovakian association for the printing and publishing industries ZPnS, demand for printing paper increased in Slovakia between 1992 and 1996 from 70,000 t to 109,000 t. In the same period, total turnover with printed matter increased by almost 61%. In 1996, daily newspapers accounted for 20.5% of Slovakian printing paper consumption, magazines 19.6%, books 39.8% and contract and commercial printing for the rest. Offset printing has a market share of 81%, gravure printing that of 11%. High material costs, which amount to 65% of total production costs, are a problem for the Slovakian printing industry. Only 15-18% of paper, ink und other materials needed are produced in the home country. Almost all printing machines are imported.

Pliva erh lt Kredit von 85 US$
Article Abstract:
An international consortium of banks has granted a US$ 85mn loan to Pliva, the Croatian pharmaceutical company. Pliva is building a new production unit for solid oral pharmaceuticals in Zagreb. However Pliva also wants to expand production of injections. The tender of the first part of the project was won by construction company Tehnika of Zagreb. The tender for the second part is expected for autumn 1998. Furthermore, Pliva is to build a new research unit in Zagreb.

In 1997, sales of pharmaceuticals (retail price) grow by 26.6% to Sk 16.7bn. Sales in industrial or import prices were Sk 11.9bn. Imports accounted for Sk 10.3bn. Market share of local producers fell to 13.4%. The association of Slovak pharmaceutical companies AFV SR has published a study on how much could be saved if local products were used instead of imports. The Slovak health insurance could have saved Sk 1bn, if doctors had preferred Slovak drugs.
