Dubai targets trans-shipment role
Article Abstract:
Dubai Airport is undergoing construction for a new $200-million cargo terminal intended to address growth in air cargo. Current facilities are congested, and officials have reported a new 10-year plan. In 1997, the airport handled 400,000 tons of cargo, which is almost twice its design capacity. Cargo's annual growth rates are at 15%, with no indication of becoming lower. There are predictions saying that the terminal will require facilities capable of accommodating 1 million tons by 2005, 2 million by 2014 and 2.17 million by 2018.
