E EUROPE: HARBOE TO TARGET MARKETS
Article Abstract:
The Danish brewery Harboe will mainly focus on expansion in Eastern Europe in the next few years. MD Bernhard Griese says the company will focus on markets where the large international brewery groups are not established. The main product for the expansion is the strong beer "Bear Beer". Six-seven years ago, Harboe acquired the Estonian brewery Viru Olu, which now has reached about a SEK 90mn (USD 13mn) turnover and a 25% market share. The aim is to reach at least a DKr 175mn turnover within the next five years. Harboe also owns a 49% stake in the Latvian tapping plant Alus Avots, which distributes Viru Olu's beer in Latvia and Lithuania, where the market share is 20% and 5% respectively. Harboe is also targetting the Russian market through its German company Darguner Brauerei, and was a leading supplier of strong beer in Russia before the crisis in August 1998. According to Bernhard Griese, sales in Russia are now slowly increasing again.
