ECB steps back from rate signals

Jean-Claude Trichet, president of the European Central Bank, questions the level of transparency the bank currently provides in communicating its policies on interest rates. Such a change would most likely be opposed by members of the financial services industry and politicians who have been requesting more guidance from the bank, not less.

Trichet urges fiscal restraint

The new president of the European Central Bank, Jean-Claude Trichet, called on European governments to exercise fiscal restraint. Trichet said that governments should control budget deficits in order to spur on a recovery.
