ESPN dropped the ball
Article Abstract:
Disney's ESPN, which has held a dominant position in sports programming in the US since 1979, is now facing growing competition from Fox Sports Net, a joint venture between News Corp and Liberty Media. Fox Sports Net has established itself as rival to ESPN through setting up a large number of small regional networks, rather than competing directly. Its reach, at 65 million households, is smaller than that of ESPN, but its ratings are often double.

Article Abstract:
Subsidizing public television made sense when there were a limited number of broadcast channels. But now, with the emergence of digital TV, and scores of new channels, it may be time to end public subsidies and let the channels compete on their programming merits.
