EU: REVIEW OF THE ORGANIC FOODS SECTOR
Article Abstract:
Organic foods respond to a real consumer need for food safety. Organic agriculture must represent 10% of arable European land in 2005, compared with 5% at present. It remains to be seen if the products from organic agriculture are really safer than those from regular agriculture. In order to be fit for human consumption, any product on the market, whether it is organic or regular, must legally be wholesome. Nevertheless, organic products appear to be safer because they come from a method of production which guarantees the absence of any industrialisation, or utilisation of chemical substances. In addition, these products are certified by independent specialised organisations approved by public authorities and found to be in compliance with organic agriculture.
