EU court backs France on aid to two telecom companies
Article Abstract:
The European Union's European Court of First Instance ruled against an appeal from Bouygues Telecom S.A. that claims the French government illegally funded rival mobile telecommunications operators when it extended their mobile-phone 3G licenses at no charge. The third-generation mobile licenses in contention were granted to Bouygues competitors Orange, owned by France Telecom S.A., and SFR, owned by Vodafone Group PLC and Vivendi S.A. The court states that the government acted legally, and saves Orange and SFR from paying the French government approximately $5.45 bil each.
