EU vehicle-emissions plan could stir industry fight

The European Commission announced new emission reduction standards for the automobile industry aimed at decreasing carbon dioxide emissions from vehicles by 25%. Limits are based on vehicle weight. Sizeable penalties will be phased in starting in 2012 for manufacturers that do not meet the Commission's targets.

EU ministers include airlines in carbon-trading program
Article Abstract:
Environmental ministers for the European Union have agreed that airlines will be included in the 27-nation bloc's program for emissions trading, beginning in 2012. Airlines will purchase 10% of permits at auction upfront, but figures for successive years have not yet been decided.
