Hindustan Motors Ltd (HML) has undertaken an innovative marketing strategy called Personalised Marketing or Home Shows before launching its Mitsubishi Lancer, in the passenger car segment. The company has created an information-packed 90- minute CD-ROM presentation on the car, to introduce it to a pre- chosen target audience. Lancer is scheduled to be launched by late-August or by early-Septembe, from HML's new plant at Trivallur in Tamil Nadu. Two models of the car, produced in collaboration with Mitsubishi Motors of Japan, the 1.5 litre petrol and two-litre diesel will be launched simultaneously. Each model will have a choice of five colours. The car will be priced between Rs600,000 and Rs800,000 and HML hopes to sell around 4,500 to 5,000 cars in the first year of launch. (gsh)

GMIL MULLS ASTRA BUY-BACK SCHEME FOR BULK BUYERS

General Motors India Ltd (GMIL) plans a unique buy-back scheme for bulk buyers of its Opel Astra model. The cars are to be bought back by the company's dealers at 45 percent of the invoice value after 2 years and 35 percent of the invoice value after 3 years. The cars are then to be re-conditioned and sold in the second hand car market. This scheme is being planned to overcome the stagnant growth in the mid-sized car segment in the last 6 months. Only 314 Opel Astra cars were sold in April 1998. (khr)

OPEL ASTRA PRICES HIKED

General Motors India Ltd (GMIL) has announced a 3.4-3.8 percent hike in prices of three variants of Opel Astra from August 19, 1998. This is because of increased input costs due to additional duties levied in the Union Budget for 1998-99. Opel Astra 1.6 GL now costs Rs712,300 while Astra 1.6 Metro will carry a price tag of Rs647,100. The third vehicle Opel Astra 1.6 AT would be priced at Rs761,700. All prices are ex-factory Halol in Gujarat.(uh)
