Entry, licensing and research joint ventures
Article Abstract:
An incumbent monopolist threatened with potential competition who can break into the market by developing a substitute, but inferior, technology, will license the strong rival. However, the successful entrant pays a steep licensing fee in the face of the incumbent's credible threat of licensing the unsuccessful rival if the successful entrant refuses the incumbent's offer. With the incumbent's strategic use of licensing, potential entrants are more attracted to the idea of forming a research joint venture. These were gleaned from an examination of the optimal licensing policy of an incumbent monopolist faced with potential competitors.
