Roche says it will sell up to 17% of Genetech

Roche Holding Ltd. said it will sell as much as an additional 17 percent of Genentech Inc. to the public in a financial maneuver that could give the company a trading profit of as much as $2 billion in Genentech stock since this summer but provides no major benefit to Genentech or its other investors. Roche's arrangement with Genetech had given Roche marketing rights to Genentech drugs and access to its scientists but no cash. One the new offering is complete, Roche will have recouped most of its $6.6 billion Genentech investment and hold shares worth roughly $12.5 billion.
