Europe's burden
Article Abstract:
There has been little progress in lessening the level of protectionism around European Union (EU) markets in the 10 years to 1999, according to the Institute for International Economists, Washington. The European banana and beef markets are protected. There are tariffs on imported beef, EU beef producers receive subsidies, and there is a ban on imports of beef treated with hormones. Anti-dumping duties are used, as well as quotas, to control imports of some manufactured goods. Foreign companies can charge more for certain goods sold in Europe, as a result of these measures.

Europe corners the market
Article Abstract:
The European Union (EU) has setup a number of bilateral trade agreements covering most countries apart from Japan, the US, Australia, Canada, Taiwan, New Zealand, and some 'rogue' nations such as Iraq. There are political reasons for bilateral agreements, and they can help to stem labor migration. Agriculture is excluded from an agreement with South Africa, though South African farmers are efficient. South African consumers may not benefit from the agreement, though EU companies can increase their market share.

Carved up: Europe's car market
Article Abstract:
The automobile trade remains a major exception to the European open market. Car prices vary widely across borders and some countries make importing a car all but impossible. Automobiles are exempted from the rule against exclusive dealerships until 1995.
