EU Files Suit in U.S. Against Tobacco Firms

R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Holdings Inc. and Philip Morris Cos. have been charged in a civil lawsuit filed by the European Union. The lawsuit, which alleges that the tobacco companies have been complicit in cigarette smuggling, was filed in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York.

Philip Morris faces 2 trials this week

Philip Morris Cos. is faced with two trials during the week of February 22-28, 1999. The company is just coming off a $51.5 million verdict against it. The selection of jury will begin on February 22, 1999 in Portland, Oregon. A suit filed by the family of retired school janitor Jesse Williams who died of lung cancer in 1997. The plaintiffs charge Philip Morris with negligence and misrepresentation. In Akron, Ohio, the company is being sued in a class-action case for over 100 union health funds that are trying to recover money they paid in benefits linked to smoking.
