Article Abstract:
The peace process in Northern Ireland appears to have been revived, helped by Senator George Mitchell. Sinn Fein has agreed that disarmament is necessary as part of the peace process, and has committed itself to peaceful means. The unionists have ceased to demand disarmament prior to setting up a government. There are risks that the Irish Republican Army may not keep their promises, but there are great potential benefits from a peace agreement, and the unionists are right in seeking an agreement.

Ulster's omens: violence threatens to fill the province's political vacuum
Article Abstract:
Sinn Fein has won election victories in the UK and Ireland even while the affiliated Irish Republican Army has continued terrorist attacks. This could lead to more violence and the discrediting of diplomacy. Unionists deserve much of the blame, for refusing to negotiate and using violence themselves.

Exasperating Ulster: will the province's political parties ever take a risk for peace?
Article Abstract:
The factions in Northern Ireland do not trust each other, but peace should be enough to motivate them to come together for a dialogue. Obstacles to a peaceful settlement include the Sinn Fein wanting to stay armed during the talks, and the unionists not wanting to loss their union with the UK.
