Executive computing
Article Abstract:
Executive support systems (ESS), computer systems based on software incorporating artificial intelligence (AI), represent advancement beyond previous management decision software. ESS software incorporates AI functions that allow executives to develop advanced financial analyses and projections. Executives must be careful that they get a true ESS product, such as Execucom Systems' Integrated Financial Planning System, which tests hypothetical business strategies. Companies that have developed ESS products that allow PC-accessing of mainframes, networks, and minicomputers include Thorn EMI, Comshare, and Metapraxis. Businesses seeking ESS and other software packages should check out each product thoroughly and should seek corroboration of its efficacy from other users.

The tail wagged this dog almost to death
Article Abstract:
The de-merger of Bowater Corp and its former US subsidiary Bowater Inc four years ago appears to have had favorable results for the US company, which had $50 million in profits in 1986 on $920 million in sales. Finance for the capital-intensive paper and pulp firm had been difficult in London, and a heavy international taxation problem created further pressures on corporate profits. Paper and packaging analyst Sonia Falaschi of Chase Manhattan Securities asserts that although de-merger was a good idea, a Bowater move to the US would have been preferable. The remaining British firm Bowater Industries appears to have survived the austere period since de-merger, and has beaten back takeover threats, but its profit margins are still characterized as 'dreadful'.

Embarrassment of riches
Article Abstract:
Airbus Industrie, with 25% of the world market, is second to only Boeing Co in aircraft production, and recently broke into the US market. Boeing and Airbus have exchanged accusations of unfair government subsidies, with Boeing accusing Airbus of dumping and special financing packages. Airbus has been buffeted by charges of corporate mismanagement, profiteering, and lack of accountability. Senior partner Messerschmitt-Bolkow-Blohm's (West Germany) threats to withdraw from the Airbus consortium have lead to the appointment of a senior finance director and the reorganization of the supervisory board.
