Exposing the concrete facts
Article Abstract:
Exposed concrete is fashionable in building design but architects lack information about about obtaining and maintaining high quality finishes. Most concrete is specified by structural engineers and an architect intending to use exposed concrete must make a detailed specification, emphasising the importance of appearance. Concrete mix ingredients affect its colour. Fines also can be used to add colour and can be colour conditioned. The finish of concrete is affected by the formwork and consideration should be given to the arrangement, grouting and sealing of joints.

Surface treatments
Article Abstract:
Surface finishes of concrete can be protected and enhanced by use of hardeners, sealers and colourings. Hardeners make the surface durable but change its appearance. Sealers protect the surface and appearance and may also protect against graffiti. The cost, appearcnce effects and maintenance need of hardeners and sealers should be assessed before one is chosen. The colour of the surface of concrete may be changed by chemical stains or colour wax.
