FOODGRAIN OUTPUT TO ELUDE TARGET
Article Abstract:
India's total foodgrain production for 1998-99 is estimated at 195.2 million tonnes against the projected target of 200 million tonnes. In 1997-98, the total foodgrain output was 192.4 million tonnes. The production of foodgrains has been continuously falling after it touched a high of 199 million tonnes in 1996-97. The kharif crop is expected to decline to 98.70 million tonnes (101.13 million tonnes in 1997-98). The rabi crop is likely to be higher than the 96.5 million tonnes produced in 1997-98. The production of wheat is estimated at 69 million tonnes while output of rice is pegged at 82.2 million tonnes. (gs)(vr)

KHARIF FOODGRAIN YIELD UP BY 10% IN ANDHRA

Andhra Pradesh's kharif foodgrain output is expected to increase to 87.47 lakh tonnes during 1998-99 as compared to the yield of 60 lakh tonnes during the 1997-98 kharif season. The prediction for the kharif foodgrain yield is higher by about 10 percent when compared to the figure of 79.04 lakh tonnes calculated on an average basis of five years. The kharif output of paddy is expected to be 69.16 lakh tonnes (48.48 lakh tonnes). The yields of coarse grains like jowar, bajra, maize and ragi and other millets are expected to be 14.61 lakh tonnes (9.91 lakh tonnes). (gs)

NCAEP PREDICTS 28 MT FOODGRAIN SHORTFALL IN 2025
Article Abstract:
India is likely to face a foodgrain shortage of 28 million tonnes by 2025, according to a study by National Council for Agricultural Economics and Policy (NCAEP). By 2025 AD, India will need about 338 million tonnes of foodgrains to feed 1,690 million people. The present growth trends indicate availability of only 310 million tonnes of food leaving a shortfall of 28 million tonnes. The total cropped area in the country has remained static at 142 million hectares.(uh)
