FRANCE: A LOOK AT CHAMPION-STOC
Article Abstract:
Following the merger of Carrefour and Promodes, the Stoc supermarkets will take the Champion name. The new Champion-Stoc branch will have a network of 1,732 sales outlets, totalling more than 1.852mn square metres of sales space. Champion-Stoc will be the second supermarket retail chain in France, with 28.7% of the total number of supermarkets, behind Intermarche which has 31.16%. The new Champion retail chain will rank sixth in value, with a 7.2% value market share, following Leclerc with 16.4%, Intermarche with 13.8%, Carrefour with 12%; and Auchan with 10.3%, but ahead of Systeme U with 6.4%. Champion was chosen over Stoc due to several factors, including the Champion chain's brand awareness, resulting from long-lasting investment in advertising, as well as Champion's structure, based on a network of independents, of which a majority are franchised - 390 affiliates for 546 stores, compared with only 89 for Stoc.
