FRANCE: COMMERCE CONFERENCE HELD
Article Abstract:
The Conseil du Commerce de France (CCF) held its ninth Commerce Conference on 2 and 3 October 2000. The conference discussed responsible commerce, which must concern itself with concrete problems such as the euro, electronic commerce, and taxes. The CCF is going to launch Rassurer, Accompagner, and Secourir (RAS) with the purpose of helping clients and shopkeepers when the shift to the euro is made. It puts the case that there could be mistakes and undertakes to reimburse clients if mistakes are made. The CCF also recommends having people in the stores to explain the shift to the euro during the first months. Concerning electronic commerce, the CCF wants the L@belsite to be set up rapidly in order to guarantee the quality of electronic commerce sites. The Institut du Commerce Electronique's powers will be strengthened. The CCF criticised the tax system on capital gains when selling, and on taxes on wealth, which is a danger for the survival and development of certain companies. Commerce created 67,000 jobs in the first half of 2000, compared with 69,000 for the full year of 1999. However, the sector suffers from the lack of qualified labour.

FRANCE: L'OREAL INVESTS IN RESEARCH
Article Abstract:
In a recent interview, Xavier Filou from L'Oreal France revealed that in his opinion, own brand products will never gain more than a 20% market share of the hygiene and beauty product market in France. This is due to the fact that groups such as L'Oreal are more innovative and offer more product communication than is available for own brand products. This is particularly true with suncare products where consumers prefer to trust the security and efficiency of products such as Ambre Solaire which have been rigourously tested. With goods such as eau de cologne or hygiene products, consumers are less discriminatory. In 1997 L'Oreal invested FFr 1.7bn in its research laboratories, which employ more than 2,000 staff.
