FRANCE: MICROSOFT/LINUX ON TOP OF SERVER MARKET
Article Abstract:
The French computer server market saw 27% growth in 1999 in terms of volume and stability in terms of value. According to a survey carried out by IDC, Linux saw sales grow by three-fold between 1998 and 1999, but servers sold with the Linux operating system built in still only represent no more than 1% of the market. The top of the range market in this sector is expected to remain with Unix, or Windows 2000 Datacenter Server, as from the end of 2000, or start of 2001. As for Linux, it should make its way onto the lower level range by 2004. According to IDC, sales of Novell's operating system should see sales grow at a rate of 16.6% by 2004 in France, after having sold 30,000 units of its NetWare system in 1999. Microsoft, however, should reinforce and retain its leading position on the French market, following the sale of 170,000 units of its NT/2000 system in 1999.
