FRANCE: MONOPRIX-PRISUNIC'S 99 SHOW HOP
Article Abstract:
The Monoprix-Prisunic group is going to organise its 12th Show Hop trade fair, which will have 230 exhibitors, at the CNIT at La Defense, starting on 27 October 1999. This will be an opportunity for manufacturers and retailers to meet and discuss current subjects - this year the discussions will be on the city centre. Monoprix-Prisunic will offer a City Centre Monoprix Grand Prize. The manufacturers exhibiting at the trade fair may offer a product in one or 14 categories of products concerned. This year the group will also award a Product Grand Prize of the Century which will go to a brand created more than 40 years ago, and which will still exist. The products chosen will be star in Monoprix-Prisunic catalogues and will be featured on the retailer's aisle ends during the year 2000.

Now that the French retail group Monoprix & Prisunic have completed the organisational phase of its merger, it is going to focus on its commercial strategy. It will focus on bringing back city centres in 1999. According to Christian Pimont, the managing director of Monoprix & Prisunic, this involves facilitating customer purchases in town, through a selection of products which meet the needs of city dwellers and the development of services such as longer opening hours. Mr Pimont said that Monoprix & Prisunic is investing FFr 1bn over three years for store remodelling. Monoprix & Prisunic is also getting ready to open new stores at Havre, Poitiers, Annecy, and Bondy.

As part of the strategy to make luxury sophisticated-type products available to the general public, and retake the initiative regarding new products, Monoprix and Prisunic have launched a range of 10 bath products (5 soaps and 5 vitamin-enriched bath/shower gels) named 'Etat d'Espirit'. The range is aimed at women who live a hectic city lifestyle and want to relax. Scents include 'cut grass' or 'fig/mandarin', and the range is priced at FFr 10.90 for a 100 gram soap, or FFr 17.90 for 250ml of the bath/shower gel. In 1999, it is expected that the Etat d'Espirit range will be extended with 5 new products including effervescent bath tablets.
