FRANCE: RETAILERS AND ETHICAL TRADING
Article Abstract:
It appears that retailers are under growing pressure concerning the promotion of ethical trading products. Since consumer associations are aware of this question, food retail chains such as Carrefour, Auchan, Casino, and Promodes, appear to be increasingly interested in equitable trading. Casino, Carrefour, Auchan, Promodes and Monoprix may soon adopt the Max Havelaar social label, created by the Dutch association of the same name, for their private label coffee. Under pressure from associations, such as the 'De l'Ethique sur l'Etiquette' (Ethics on the Label) collective association which fights for human rights in developing countries, and from consumers' signatures on petitions, retailers recognise the need to establish a good conduct code based on the International Labour Organisation's recommendations. In the meantime, Carrefour, Promodes and Auchan say that they are willing to participate in an experimental control program designed to examine the best investigation methods, and the controls which may be used.
