FRANCE: SALES OF WHITE SPIRITS
Article Abstract:
In France, 14,097,279 litres of white spirits were sold for the twelve months ending 29 August 1999, up 4.7% compared with the same period in 1998. Sales of white rum represented 6,664,506 litres, up 7.3%, and of this total, white rum with 40[degree sign] of alcohol represented 2,928,955 litres, up 7.3%, followed by white rum with more than 55[degree sign] of alcohol which represented 1,921,070 litres, up 8.1%, while white rum with between 45[degree sign] and 50[degree sign] of alcohol represented 1,801,251 litres, up 6%. Sales of gin came to 3,658,947 litres for the twelve months ending 29 August 1999, up 1.8%, vodka sales came to 2,94,837 litres, up 4.7%. Only tequila sales decreased during this period, with sales of 848,990 litres, down 1.4%.

FRANCE: LIGHT CHEESE SALES PICK UP
Article Abstract:
After a boom at the beginning of the eighties, sales of light cheese slumped, and then picked up again in 1998 with around a 20% increase. Camembert type cheeses are the leading segment on the market, which represented 3,700 tonnes for the twelve months ending 31 March 1999, calculated monthly, up 17%. This segment is dominated by Coeur de Lion with a 52% market share. The second segment is soft cheese which represented 2,600 tonnes, up 19%. The third segment is processed cheese, which fell to 2,400 tonnes. Bel is going to launch Sylphide Fondant et Croquant, a dual-compartment container with 25 grams of processed cheese with 20% fat content, and 10 grams of whole wheat bread sticks. Another segment is light that of light emmental.

According to analysts, purchases by the French have risen 2.2% to 2.6% in 1998. In the food sector, chilled organic foods are expected to rise 30% to 40% in the second half of 1998, and organic products in the grocery department are expected to increase 10% during this period. However, the sectors which grow the most in 1998 will be mobile telephones and multimedia. The number of mobile telephone users is expected to represent 18% of the French population by the end of 1998, compared with 12.4% in the first five months of 1998. Multimedia is expected to increase 28% over the year, and household effects are expected to increase 2%.
