Article Abstract:
Birla Periclase, has stopped production of sea water magnesia at its plant at Bheemunipatnam in Andhra Pradesh. Birla Periclase is a division of Indian Rayon and Industries Ltd. The move follows the fall in demand for seawater magnesia from the steel industry. The steel industry uses sea water magnesia for producing refractory bricks. The plant which commenced commercial production on February 27, 1998 has been producing 1,000 tonnes of sea water magnesia per month against an installed capacity of 4000 tonnes. The company has not been able to sell over 1,000 tonnes per month. Currently, Birla Periclase has a stock of 6,000 tonnes of seawater magnesia. (ag)

STEEL INDUSTRY ON VERGE OF Rs1,300-CR LOSS
Article Abstract:
The domestic steel industry is likely to show a loss of about Rs1300 crore in 1998-99 against a profit of Rs993 crore in 1996- 97, according to the Essar group. The losses by the industry are attributed to a steep fall in steel prices in 1998-99 even after the imposition of a floor price of $302 per tonne for hot rolled coils. The domestic prices are currently ruling at $240-245 per tonne of commercial grade steel. (khr)
