Facilities are getting friendlier
Article Abstract:
Speakers at the 1999 World Workplace Europe conference described the changes taking place in workplace design. Some speakers emphasized the importance of design in giving companies a competitive advantage. Some speakers described offices designed to promote new ways of working, whilst others described workplaces designed to promote social interaction as a means of retaining good staff. Environmental considerations have some importance, but some companies may attach greatest importance to the most prominent examples of environmental friendliness.

Lessons in listening: facilities managers have a lot they'd like to teach architects about what is actually needed of a building, and how it should adapt to the future
Article Abstract:
Facilities managers want continuity from architects according to a recent conference of the British Institute of Facilities Management. They also want practical designs serving user needs and building that can adapt over time. There were suggestions that those responsible for design should also have responsibility for upkeep, and architects can no longer simply hand maintenance manuals to clients and leave them to cope. Architects must follow through so they have a knowledge of the problems that can arise from their designs.
