Voters in Malawi's Jun 14, 1993 referendum rejected the Malawi Congress Party's plea for continued rule, with 63% of the electorate expressing a preference for a multi-party democracy. Pres Banda, who has held office since 1963, may be forced to cede power to reformers.

Farewell cartel: Japanese shipbuilding
