Farm lessons
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom government aims to improve life on public housing projects, and Broadwater Farm is one such project from which lessons can be learnt. Residents have been given power, and crime rates are lower than in nearby neighborhoods, while resident have sought to eradicate racial violence. There is also cooperation between authorities such as health and local government professionals. Funding has been increased, and this could not be continued indefinitely on a nation wide scale. There is a need to boost employment levels in order to make such neighborhoods less dependent on government aid.

The Chinese government aims to develop low-cost housing in the private sector in a move which should help boost economic growth. Most Chinese in urban areas pay low rents and live in state-owned accommodation. Chinese cities such as Shanghai are already seeking to abolish free state housing. Shanghai is seeking to increase the amount of space per person, as well as privatizing housing. There are some obstacles to change, such as lack of experience of commercial banks with mortgages.

Glasgow council, Scotland, plans to hand over public housing to a non-profit making housing association. Rent increases are to be capped over a five-year period. The scheme is important for the political career of Socttish first minister, Donald Dewar.
