UK Chancellor of the Exchequer Norman Lamont may now be willing to accept greater macroeconomic policy cooperation with the European Community (EC). EC leader Jacques Delors has long advocated a more unified approach to fiscal and monetary policies to spur growth.

France is holding a referendum on the EC's plan for monetary union Sep 20. If the voters reject the proposal the EC could continue toward a single market but the economic effects could be negative in the short-term. British and French relations are analysed.
