The European fast food markets are expected during the forecast period of 1997 to 2002 to record real value growth, that will be more dynamic in developing markets such as Italy. The Italian market is expected to record more than a 96% expansion and a 65% increase in the number of fast-food outlets over the six-year period. Spain is expected to record a strong real value growth of 53.2%, with major players in the pizza and burgers sectors planning a huge expansion. France, Germany and the UK meanwhile, are expected to record like growth levels of some 50%, with France and the UK set to reach maturity and saturation over the same period.

A study of European fast food markets show that all sectors, particularly pizza, listed positive value growth over the five-year period from 1993 to 1997. The top performing pizza sector listed its strongest growth in Italy, with value sales up by 191.8% within the period from a small base. Pizza listed sales growth of more than twice in the UK, Spain, Germany and France, spurred by home delivery and take-away. Meanwhile, the burgers sector including hamburgers and chicken-based products, listed strong value growth across markets in the same period.
