Market in the making: long in the shadow of Asian equity, bonds move to centre stage
Article Abstract:
The maturing economies of East Asia are in need of indigenous bond markets to finance long term capital growth. Though their liquidity is renowned, the leading economies of East Asia cannot rely on short term financing to fund local infrastructure projects. Tax increases might dissuade capital investment, and short-term bank borrowing could lead to inflation. Bond markets allow governments to amortize the cost of expenditures, but political stability is necessary for such long-term financing. Long-term loans are an expression of faith in political as well as economic stability.

Yards of disrepair
Article Abstract:
Singapore's economic slowdown has affected its shipyards. Once relishing the spate of orders for their services and rising profits, the country's docks have witnessed their profits being eaten up by increased costs. Nevertheless, the industry is not expected to find itself in a critical situation since losses are not expected. The shipyard industry in Singapore is internationally known for the quality of its services and its strategic location.
