Feeding inflation
Article Abstract:
The Philippine economy has been troubled since mid-year 1995, plagued by a rice shortage, multiple hurricanes, weak monetary policy, and rising crude-oil prices. These have driven inflation projections from 6.5% past 10%, punished the stock exchange, and threatened the hoped-for balanced budget. However, exports may rise 23.1% from 1994, and the overall balance of payments had a $1 billion surplus by Aug. The main long-term problem remains a low savings rate, especially compared to the rest of Southeast Asia.

Article Abstract:
The Philippine economy seems poised to take off as soon as the power is there to give thrust. Manila's brownouts are less severe than they once were, and the Luzon grid may have power in excess by Jul 1994. The recently sluggish economy promises a surge, led by rising consumer and durable-goods spending. Stock prices shot up in July; the economy tends to lag them by six months. Falling interest rates and inflation belie the recent spurt in unemployment.
