Who wants to be a millionaire?
Article Abstract:
United Kingdom management buyouts (MBOs) reached record levels in 1996 when they rose by 43% to 7.8 billion pounds sterling, and 1997 has also been an active year. MBOs do not always perform well, though some, such as Shalibane, have done so. Shalibane is quoted on the UK Alternative Investment Market (Aim) and has increased its market capitalization by more than 100% in Sep 1997 since it was floated in Sep 1996. New MBOs are likely to continue since investors are increasingly interested in smaller companies of a high quality.

Fever pitch
Article Abstract:
Management buy-out (MBO) activity has been has been a strong and highly successful feature of the UK business world during the 1990s, but indications during 1998 suggest increasing danger ahead. Deals have become increasingly ambitious, there are fears that the stockmarket may not be able to accommodate the level of MBO activity, and venture capitalists will be under pressure to prove themselves capable of developing the companies in which they have invested. Management buyout teams will have to be committed and well-prepared.

Investing in our own
Article Abstract:
The UK technology industry has difficulty in gaining sufficient funding from venture capitalists. The government could help the industry by ensuring it uses technology developed in the UK. Although UK technology firms often develop good software it is usually sold to US firms and remarketed to suit US industry. British companies often have to use software made for the US market. Poor investment in British technology firms leads them to be underfunded and therefore they often fail.
