Fiat chairman, Paolo Fresco, aims to shed unpromising businesses, and deals that make sense are being carried out more rapdily than before, These deals include the acquisition of Case by Fiat's subisidary involved in construction equipment and farm machinery, New Holland. Fiat has also acquired Progressive Tools and Industries and this makes Fiat's Comau a world leader in automation and robotics. Businesses seen as a distraction, such as telecoms and pharmaceuticals, have been shed.

Ford Motor Co consolidated its Ford North America and Ford Europe operations into one unit. The new unit will have four development teams based in the US and one in Europe. New cars will be developed and marketed globally, rather than regionally, which is a risk for Ford.
