Generali board approves holocaust suit settlement

Assicurazioni Generali S.p.A.'s board gave its approval on the payment of $100 million to settle a lawsuit over holocaust victims' unpaid policies for life insurance. Generali's settlement agreement involves the immediate payment to survivors of the holocaust and their heirs of $10 million, with the balance to be settled by the Italian insurance company when a US federal judge endorses the settlement deal. Generali also gave its commitment to give contributions to a commission that will handle the claims of holocaust victims worldwide.

Colaninno Group becomes top Olivetti shareholders

Olivetti SpA Chief Executive Roberto Colaninno becomes the largest shareholder of the Italian company after his group, Bell SA, purchased 8% of Olivetti through several holding concerns. Luxembourg-based Bell was created with the help of other investors that include Chase Manhattan Bank, Interbanca, Banca Antoniana Popolare Veneta and GPP International. Colaninno, who also owns a 16% stake in Fingruppo SpA, replaced Schroder PLC as well as a division of Deutsche Bank and Mannesmann as the largest shareholder in Olivetti.
