Fields to factories: changing employment pattern helps unions
Article Abstract:
Private sector unions in Thailand have been traditionally weakened by worker perception of jobs as temporary measures against seasonal agricultural hardship. However, as more laborers migrate from the agricultural regions to the economic centers, workers are increasingly motivated to organize into unions and improve labor conditions. This strengthening of private sector labor unions becomes even more important in view of possible problems which could arise between domestic labor and foreign owners of companies.

Back to work: organised labour seeks to restore its influence
Article Abstract:
Thailand's democratic and economic progresses have prompted workers from both the public and private sectors to demand their share of economic gains. Leading the efforts are state enterprise employees who have already petitioned Premier Chuan Leekpai to reinstate the unions which were dissolved in Feb 1991 due to perceptions that they were obstructions to economic development and political stability. Keeping to his democratic program, Chuan has promised to reinstate union rights for state workers.

Feeling squeezed: Thailand's economic woes fuel worker unrest
Article Abstract:
There have been a spate of labour disputes in Thailand over recent months, due to the increasing assertiveness of the workforce, combined with the slowing of the economy. Foreign investors and local businessmen have serious concerns about the rising number of strikes in the country. Industrial workers have seen a huge reduction in their effective take home pay, and due to sales falls, companies have had to reduce extra shifts and the usually generous year-end bonuses.
