Fire engineering developments: the recent fire engineering workshop at the RIBA is one of a series aiming to keep architects up to date with new methodologies
Article Abstract:
Fire engineering has not yet reached the capability in modelling and performance prediction seen in structural and services engineering. However an engineering approach can free up design, and an early example is the Royal Exchange Theatre, where fire engineering began early in design. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling can monitor heat build up, flow of hot gases and movement of people. Architects must understand fire engineering so that they are better informed to commission fire consultants.

The fire-resisting overcoat
Article Abstract:
Keim reports that its mineral paints have an expected lifespan of between 20 and 30 years, or even longer, if used to overcoat existing multiple paint layers. Research also indicates that the company's paints offer high levels of fire protection when used in this way. Recent testing has focused on Biosil, which is used for internal render and plaster walls and ceilings, and on a two-coat system which bonds to existing paints. This can be used on all external mineral substrates.

Controlling air flow to fight fire
Article Abstract:
Fire engineering at the design stage of a building means that if a fire breaks out, smoke can be manipulated to allow people to be evacuated under it. However, fire engineering is still a young science, and there is a need for a standardised set of fire-engineering design guidelines. Computer modelling is an important part of fire engineering: modelling covers lighting, fire and smoke, ventilation and thermal performance.
