Article Abstract:
Banco Santander Central Hispanoamericano will be a new operation formed from the merger of Banco Santander and Banco Central Hispanoamericano. Bank mergers had been anticipated, as the Spanish banking market remains overcrowded. However, the speed of this deal took many observers by surprise. It will be necessary to address a number of overlaps and strategic differences within the new operation, which will initially have 8,681 offices worldwide. The new bank will also wish to place itself in a position to be involved in cross-border mergers or alliances.

Article Abstract:
The planned merger of Chuo Trust and Mitsui Trust can be regarded as a positive development in the Japanese banking industry. This deal will prompt all the country's leading banks to reconsider their strategies. It is likely that more mergers will take place, possibly before the financial year ends in Mar 1999. Sanwa Bank and Toyo Trust have also announced that they plan to create a 'comprehensive alliance,' and have stated that they have not discounted a merger. These developments will serve to boost the credibility of the Financial Supervisory Agency.
