Perrier recalled 72 million bottles of its mineral water in the US market in February 1990 in response to the discovery of benzene in the product during routine lab tests in the US. Perrier has 85% of the sparkling water market in the US, its largest market outside of France, and the reputation of the product is based on purity. Independent recalls of Perrier water by distributors occurred in Japan, the Netherlands, and Denmark, and Perrier's stock on the Paris Bourse dropped 15% in three days. The company benefited from the media coverage of the recall, but the company's management originally was seen as not being direct about the issue of the source of contamination. Management has brought in the advertising and public relations agency that handled the Tylenol crisis, Burson-Marsteller, to aid in the product's relaunch.

Article Abstract:

Modern management methods from the west and Japan have arrived in the People's Republic of China. An MBA type of program is being operated in Beijing in English. Economic changes which have occured in China since 1979 have at last opened local market in China. Local managers now feel the need for forecasting and marketing skills. Most managers in China have an engineering background and little or no understanding of management science as practiced in the West. The Chinese have come to understand that a knowledge of western management practices will be of benefit to their continued economic development.
