Flight plan: Laos offers control of its air services to Peking firm
Article Abstract:
Laos in Oct 1993 gave provisional assent to allowing China Travel Services, China's government-owned tourism agency, to run the domestic flights of the Laotian national airline, Lao Aviation International. China Travel Services and its Hongkong subsidiary, China Travel Air Service (CTAS), had been running Lao Aviation's international flights since acquiring 40% of the firm in Feb 1992. The proposed deal would give the Lao government a 30% stake in the airline, CTAS 30% and silent investors 40%.

A fire at a toy factory near Bangkok, Thailand on May 10, 1993 killed almost 200 workers and raised questions about safety in Asian factories owned by foreign investors. Hongkong toy company Kader Industrial own 40% of the factory, affiliates of Thailand's Charoen Pokphand own another 40% while Taiwanese investors own the final 20%. Kader and Charoen Pokphand both insisted that they had had no role in running the factory, which Thai investigators found to be below standard.
